Preserving Food - A Handy Money Saving Skill

In this cash strapped era of austerity, keeping hold of the purse strings and household income is a pre-requisite.  Taking advantage of the “reduced for quick sale”, and the “BOGOF” offers in the supermarkets is a penny saving way to fill your freezer and cupboard stores for a fraction of the price.

Freezing is also a great money saving asset.  Snap up the bulk buying offers when they are being made as they may not be available again anytime soon.

Find out which foods not to freeze and get stocking your freezer!

Preserve Your Fruit and Veg

A great way to preserve your money and your fabulous seasonal fruit and veg, is the old fashioned way, before fridges and freezers were ever invented!  Whether it be Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn, preserving is a delicious way to let your favourite fruits and veggies last.

Autumn fruits make wonderful jams, chutneys, spicy sweetmeats and liquors.

Keep your favourite Summer salad crop, such as tomatoes, cucumbers and berries stored as delicious relishes and pickles.

Storing Apples and Pears the Old Fashioned Way

Wrapping your seasonal glut of orchard fruits in newspaper or tissue paper and storing them in a cool dark place, will let your fruit keep for some months. Just like grandma used to do!
